O'Neil, who was in her high school year during the auditions, volunteered for Canadian Idol's 3rd season during the first months of 2005. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm for her performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and the bottom 2. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following an impressive string of performance. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
